Google is making us Stoopid

I came across this sapid article in this month's issues of Atlantic Monthly by Nicholas Carr: http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200807/google- it's titled, "Is Google Making Us Stoopid?" Interestingly enough, this article graced the front page of the article, and no doubt about it, it would seem a bit sacrilegious to not have any Google-related item make the front page of anything. Why, you ask?...Probably because Google has become a multi-million dollar enterprise and continues to be on the cusp of innovation and ingenuity in terms of search engine capabilities and applications.

This article capitalizes on the notion that Google is making us all stupid and most importantly, downright unfocused because of the convenience of searching for absolutely anything in the cyberspace world. I, too, find myself getting distracted when I am sitting down with a rather hearty, thick novel I'd like to finish reading but simply cannot because my mind is thinking full-throttle on other stuff I could be googling online. Come on now, they named it "Google" for a reason right?

At any rate, check out this article; it will surely shed some light on how this phenomenal search engine is transforming everyone's lives- albeit, not in a positive way either. Yes, we are able to access a wealth of knowledge at the touch of our fingertips, but at what cost? The cost of deterring us from a reading task that requires more than 3 minutes worth of concentration?

Technology is a crutch for the lazy. I've been thrown into the throes of modern-day technology! Helpppppp!

P
P.S. Some useful trivia:
* Google.com was officially registered on Sept. 15, 1997.
* The name was initially "Googolplex" but one of the founders shortened it to "Googel". When the name was typed in the Internet Registry to see if the domain name was available, it was accidentally spelled "Google.com", which was available and the name stuck.
